For 30 years, this book has been the bible of pond building. This third edition has been completely redesigned to celebrate the anniversary and to incorporate the latest information on the subject.

It explains everything from selecting a site, designing and planning the pond, to sampling the soil and planning for drainage and wildlife management. The book includes illustrations that guide you through the entire process as well as explaining the issues and decisions that will need to be made to undertake the project successfully.

Any idea what information is new for the 3rd edition? I have one of the older editions and very much enjoyed the book.

And thanks for all the great links below. I am such an admirer of Natural Swimming Pools! Someday....

I think I may have an early edition of this book but can't find it right now..it was a sandy or creamy colored book, not the bright colored on in the photo so I'm not sure it is the same author, I'll keep looking but if it is the same book it is a good one..read it many times.

I give this book 8 out of 10 acorns

Tim Matson has worked in the earthpond world for decades and he is one the most renowned experts on this subject, he has written books, and even filmed a DVD on the topic. If we want to have a quick reference book on our shelves that reminds us of the importance and complexity of earthponds this is the book.
Tim Matson takes the reader through a journey on ponds based on his thirty or more years personal experience. The book is divided in three sections: the cabin pond, pond sculpture and pond care.
The first section is a recollection of the authors experiences in pond excavation or pond systems he encountered or studied around the world. The author starts to take us more into understanding the world that builds up around ponds and in them.
The second section on pond sculpture takes us in more specific aspects of pond construction from siting, to excavation or spillways, and last the digger the ponds that carves itself. Here we find general infromation on how and where to site a pond and excavate it. Matson shares his knowledge on how ponds differ in relation to the site they are carved in and the use we want to excavate them for. Tim has raised fish in ponds for decades and he shares his knowledge on this possible income stream. He discusses obviously the difference between dig-out ponds and dammed ponds that are related to the landscape. These chapters let the reader understand better what to expect from, and ask a contractor that we call on our land to do the job.
Very well explained is the importance of spillways and the difference between piped spillways and earth spillways. The newbie pond builder will have the possibility to evaluate what is preferable for a given site, I propend for earth spillways.
The third section is on pond maintenance and restoration. Tim explains what has to be done to correctly maintain our earth water reservoirs. How we have to intervene if there are problems, an example is algae, or if we need to repair damages.
The writing is overall clear, direct and simple. With pleasure one reads the authors experiences and and learns general information on earthponds. I think anyone that is thinking of carving his own pond should have this quick reference book at hand to be inspired and informed on what great possible endless opportunities can come to our properties with the correct pond knowledge.
This book is a good companion to another of Tim Matsons works that I will create a summary for and review shortly: Earth ponds A to Z an illustrated encyclopedia.
