Old enough to wish I'd started this earlier, wise enough to know that I wasn't ready to start this earlier. Pondering and planning big changes.
Thought I was handy till I read the list of PEP skills. Lots to learn.

Rifle is fine if it's shooting 1.5-2" at 100 IMO. Most of that is probably you, not the rifle. If that's off the shelf ammo that you can find easily, buy a few boxes of that and you're good to go for the next decade - you don't need to shoot 100's of rounds out of a deer getting gun.

What distance are you shooting deer at? You mentioned wanting to hit a grapefruit at 300m, how does that translate to deer vitals at the distance you are likely to shoot one at?

Again IMO, unless you need to be shooting further than 100m you're probably good to go for an old rifle, no sense in hacking it about for marginal gains. 200m doubles your group size to 4" (assuming excitement and adrenaline doesn't open that size up!). 200m is a long way to shoot something if you're not 110% certain you're going to kill it cleanly.

If you NEED to shoot further, don't mess up the hand me down rifle, you might regret that one day. But a modern bolt action rifle and be amazed how little improvement there is after spending $1000 or more.

Don't make card stock shims - when it's damp they'll swell. If you must make shims make them out of something non porous.

Well I'm not planning on a grand gesture I dont think. But my wife and I (now a daughter as well which is added impetus) have been planning on leaving the city for some time.

Our plans don't include Osee Mtn levels of wilderness, nor do they currently include only eating what we grow or barter.

But they do include living somewhere that we have more space than the 1'x5' beds on two sides of our 6x10' backyard.

An acre is a lot of land if you're starting from nothing IMO. Living where we do currently we are surrounded by very expensive real estate, but have family in the Okanagan. Relocating there provides us the seed of the plan. Plus more family is good.

I've just been reading SKIP and PEP, which have provided me with a lot of good food for thought, and constructive avenues that I can pursue to improve right now, no waiting. Worth the price of admission right there.

Any suggestions? An intro thread seems like a poor place to turn away advice from those more experienced.

Best coast. Though perhaps the future is in the Interior.

No experience beyond back yard agriculture of a couple fig tree and various tomato and other small seasonal plantings. Now a father to a newborn daughter and looking to increase our autarky and move somewhere that is possible.

Very much drawn to the natural rightness of self sufficiency, and looking to learn more about permaculture so that I can leave the best world for my daughter and any other children I persuade my wife to bear!

Thank you for a place to come and learn.

Well I came here to introduce myself, but saw your post title instead. I'm typing with my 11 week old daughter - Skye - asleep in my arms. Named in memory of my families (great grandfather on my father's side) past crofting on the island of the same name.

Thanks for a link to your blog.
