The rainfall moisture overnight brings out the slugs to mate. In the early morning glimmer a slug lays a scent in its slimy track and another slug picks up the invitation and the slow motion chase is on. The winner follows the leading slug up a shrub or small tree and then they join together and spin and dangle from mucus strings. Overnight the gooey entwined blobs of Leopard slug hang from bushes like odd ornaments, slowly swirling as they pass reproductive material back and forth. Slugs are hermaphrodites, meaning they are both male and female. The male sex organ is barbed and so once inserted it must be chewed off in order for the pair to uncouple. Don’t try this at home.
