I gave this book away as a gift - twice - but wished I'd read it myself. Has anyone here read it or know about this phenomenon of a tree?

Here's an NPR story about the book: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4679760.

Finally read this one over the summer and loved it! The author did an amazing job of respecting and admiring both the loggers and the environmentalists.

I was riveted by his natural history of the Pacific NW Coast.

And, Vaillant's relating of the history of both the Native Americans and the influx of Europeans starting with the otter fur trade (craze) and then moving to the timber craze gave me a whole new perspective on so many facets of our life in this area.
