That's a skill every livestock handler should be able to acquire !

Unfortunately, there's nothing more to be found about the practice.
A single subtitled video would probably reduce the plight of innumerable animals around the world.

Really interesting article. Never seen. Incision, and hand enters animal to pinch off the aorta. The film 'Urga' (also released as 'Close to Eden') is supposed to show this being done. I don't think I'd be up for trying this without some extensive hands-on training, or at the very least really getting to know the anatomy well. You can imagine it going badly wrong if you didn't know what you were doing.

I found the film online with no subtitles, just started watching a bit of it...I think it might be a quite beautiful film to watch, I don't know when the Khoj ozeeri scene takes place.

The filmed example might not be the best possible one, because he's letting go pretty quickly, but an experienced hunter could probably replicate it.

yep, there it is. It's interesting that the word means kindness and humaneness as well as slaughter. It sounds to me like the artery is pinched off or severed, not just pinched shut..so maybe that's all the time it takes. The blood is saved. It reminds me a little bit of the humane chicken slaughter video in it's strange intimacy.

Not sure I could do it. Definitely not without trying on some dead sheep to understand what to feel for, although it's probably more difficult then. Seems like without growing up in that culture and having grandfather show you it would be difficult technically and mentally.

I need to find that movie with subtitles, there's a lot of cool stuff in there. The khoj ozeeri scene falls at the end of 3/11 and the start of 4/11 here: urga Not for the squeamish, though it seems quite gentle.

The artery is definitely just pinched, otherwise you'd get tremendous blood flow.

This is a technique that'll work well with animals that are used to being handled; for the others a bullet will certainly mean a less stressful end.
But then it's first and foremost a traditional way of ensuring that no blood gets wasted.
