Keeping weeds out of finished compost

I have a finished pile of compost that I will be screening and spreading this fall. Can I cover it with a tarp or someting to keep weeks from growing in it?

I assume you are talking about covering it until use. covering it or bagging it would be your best bet to prevent blowing seeds from invading.

Plastic might make it go anaerobic, but that's no real harm if you can stand the smell.

Is there anything you want to start now, that can be transplanted just before you move the pile? That might be an interesting way to stack functions.

You might also cover it in some sort of mulch that won't pass the screen.

You can also cover it right before you use it assuming you have sunny days. We have covered new dirt with black tarp for about a week before use and the heat effectively kills off all weeds.

I sprayed them with 20% acetic acid for now. I'll cover it up this weekend.
