Newbie question here... I want to build hugelkultur beds this season on my acreage and have an abundance of chicken litter. It's fresh, with a pine shavings and straw/alfalfa/hay mix as it's base. So it has not been composted yet.
Is there any place for this in the hugelkultur beds? I will use dead semi rotted poplars on the property for the base, so I guess in my dry climate make sure they are super soaked first before using? Thanks!
An excellent addition to your hugelkultur bed! Remember that the only real drawback of the hugelkultur bed is that it is low in available nitrogen until all the soil biota has been established and can build it up. There are two solutions to this potential problem: (1) planting the hugelbed with a nitrogen fixing cover crop as the first crop, or (2) using liberal amounts of a high nitrogen manure when you are constructing it.
