Any Affordable Prefabs in US?

Hey Permies!~

First post here. I'm looking to buy a prefab home soon to move onto the farm (Central Coast of California). I would love it to be as green as possible, but all the homes I have found so far (advertised on Dwell magazine, etc...) are so overly expensive. I want something simple but modern. It could even just be a shell.

I considered a refrigerated shipping container but I would rather have something a little bit nicer. I want to put a rocket furnace in and all that too after seeing them in action here.

Anyone have any sources that they would care to share?

You didn't mention how large you wanted/needed, if it's just for you or a family, so this is just off the top of my head.  Check out "Monolithic Dome Cabins."  The 12x24ft cabin is 268 sq ft.  If you want/need to, look into buying 2 of those with the side door option, then connecting them together -- sleeping in one side and living in the other.

Thanks this is a really good start! I am looking for a one person living arrangment (or 2 hopefully someday soon enough ). Outdoor shower would be ok by me. Needs a toilet, and a kitchen and just a comfy place to lay to rest. Simple is the best. I'm willing to spend money as long as its a good value.

if youexpect to be able to avoid code enforcement hassles I'd say buy a cheap travel trailer, then build a cob cottage and move the kitchen outa the trailer into it, and build a composting toilet.

Awesome wealth of info here Moss. I especially like the idea of sleeping outside a lot of nights and being able to close my shelter up if it gets cold or rainy.

I also really love Yurts too. Anyone have experience living in the round?
