Successfully grew havana tobacco in zone 5

First time growing tobacco and I got these nice plants.They were all 8' plus tall until they started to fall over. The variety is cuban havanna. They are already producing seed pods.

Nice!  Tobacco is not one of my priorities but there are a lot of people for whom it is a high priority as they work at reducing their off-the-homestead dependencies.  And your plants look very happy.  Did you have to do anything special to get happy plants in zone 5?

Note to self, time to find those seeds and give this thing a shot.

ETA: Are you planning to cure it for a while? I know that some of the better cigars I have smoked, the leaf was cured from 5 to 7 years.

I am air curing it, definitely the longer the better. Smoking the lesser quality stuff and sweepings now, letting the higher quality leaves age. I definitely do not condone smoking if you don't do it, but if you do what better way than organically and home grown. I read a scientific paper, don't remember where, that stated that the radioactive potassium fertilizer is the cause of all the smoking related cancer, not necessarily the tobacco itself. Everything in moderation and balance. I got the seeds from a guy who adapted it to zone 6, and now I have successfully gotten it to seed. I will also be harvesting a second harvest from suckers pictured. The only thing I did was start the seeds in the window in april. But I spilled and dropped seeds without realizing it and had tobacco grow up just as successfully without the head start. My soil is fertile, that's it.

Cigars, Dr Pepper and chocolate - my only vices. Those handrolls look pretty well done.

Thanks, watched a couple of youtube vids and those were my first attempt. Definitely have the cigar smell and sweet taste on the lips.
