I'm just getting into using a broadfork on a my quarter acre annual gardens. Who here uses them, and what models do you use?

If I'm going to plant a deep rooted annual cover crop, when should I use the broadfork? Before planting it? Once it is established so that the plants will quickly recover and exploit all the new cracks? Or after the cover crop has been terminated? Would a perennial cover keep coming back even if a broadfork was used on it?

We have a Meadow Creature broadfork, and it is absolutely bombproof!  Works great for breaking up heavy soils, it is a beast of a tool though and extremely well made.  Was pretty spendy to get it shipped, but this tool will be passed down for s3veral generations!  In your case I would use the broadfork before you plant your cover crop and then again after you terminate in preparation for new planting.

I really want a Meadow Creature!

For those who broadfork their spent cover crops, is this all you do to them?  Do you leave the debris on/in the ground, or do you clear it away like weeds after letting the broadfork loosen everything up?

Would you turn that thing down? I'm controlling a mind here! Look ... look at the tiny ad ...
