For cleaning dermistead beetles are fast and thourough. They can be ordered online. Amazing the things you can buy online.
As to the smell - check out videos by people that do the skull mounts. They discuss ways to clean, whiten and seal the bone.
Creative wise - many of the most common uses have been mentioned. If you are artistic try scrimshaw. Another is inlay pieces for wooden boxes, hairbrush handles, knife handles, etc. Larger jaw bones were made into weapons. Shards were made into needles, fishhooks and darts. Other ideas - picture frames; fill jars, lamps, etc with small bones in place of seashells; use them for counting games with children, or for game pieces for role-playing games, napkin holder rings, top of a walking cane, bundle together as a vase for dried flowers or herbs. Put one on your key ring. Sell as goth, monster, primitive, etc decorations.
Scatter them in the yard to discourage people visitors, although this may encourage animal visitors. 😏

The leftover stalks might be good for making a wattle fence. If they retain rigidity after drying, they might be used for making seasonal trellises in the garden.
Also, look into bio-char.
