I've used SketchUp to design before, I didn't use it a lot but it seemed reasonable as I was learning the ropes. If you can save pieces to use as a template/object, then you could make logs of certain thickness/length and add them as needed, but I don't know if that's an option. It is free to use the web version.

If you use Revit, i suggest you a AGACAD wood framing software. It is a add on to Autodesk Revit. Only trial is free: http://www.aga-cad.com/products/bim-solutions/wood-framing-professional-suite

Maybe try Weyerhauser's software or check NDS website. Not a lot of free software out there that is worth investing time in to.

If this is a one-time deal I wouldn't fiddle with software. If you want to go far down the rabbit hole then you will need professional level software anyway.

Most timber design manuals are fairly easy to digest and have lots of tables, chrts, etc.

You might also check AIBD website/forums.

You didn't specify structural design or plans design, so I assumed structural.

How complex is the structure?
A little more description of what you are trying to do would be helpful.

Help me to help you 😉

Sketchup Make 2017 is still available for the desktop and free

Sketchup 2017

And there's an plug in for timber framing:

Timber Framing Plug In

With the plug in if you have a tenon it will make a mortise in the adjoining piece. It also generates cut sheets.

Mo-om! You're embarassing me! Can you just read a tiny ad like a normal person?
