Paul (meaning Mr Wheaton) - I meant to ask you an indiscreet question: how do you make a living? Do you have a job other than your podcasting and maintaining permies and richsoil?
Cuz I’ve heard you many times saying how you’ve given away a lot for free (indeed, I do not pay for your podcasts, nor for membership here @ permies; although I never took advantage of the software you’ve given away) – but people usually need some money to get by in this world… So I was curious as to what you do in that respect, since (I assume) you retired from software business.
Whether you choose to respond or not, thanks a bunch for what you do!!
I would say 85% of my income is conservation/frugality. By eliminating enormous recurring expenses, my income needs are vastly reduced.
Next up, there is a smattering of ads on most pages. They provide a little.
The biggest income producers are the articles on diatomaceous earth and cast iron skillets because they have links to ebay/amazon and people use those links. Those two articles pretty much pay my rent.
you say "tin pot dictator" like it is a bad thing!
Wow, thanks for sharing, Sir! Sounds like a great strategy for an empty-nester.
As for me, I may likely remain an empty-nester (child-free) for the rest of my life. That's what I feel like currently and I'm doing all within my power to contribute to solving the problem of the world overpopulation.
I love that you mention Frugality and Conservation as income. What a very good point to make. If you don't have a $600 a month electric/heating bill, it's that much less you need to worry about bringing in each month. I'm glad you have the time for your videos, blogs, and such. I would not have known about permaculture had I not run across one of your videos which led me to a Sepp video, then a Bill Mollison video....on and on. Thank you a million times over for all you do!!!
I just listed to the wining/dining podcast by Mr Wheaton last night.... Yikes, $586 per couple per night is not my definition of frugal . But point taken, people will pay well for decent food (aka permaculture food ).
Space seems cool in the movies, but once you get out there, it is super boring. Now for a fascinating tiny ad:
