We have a local park and I help when there are issues with the ducks. I've had several that have issues with their feet. They limp and their feet curl up. I usually bring them home and after a few weeks or a month they are able to walk and go back to the park. I was told it was lack of nutrition that is causing it. I have one here with both feet bad. She just rolls on her side when she tries to walk. I've been feeding her scratch grains for ducks, romaine lettuce, peas, mealworms and other greens. I need to make sure I am giving her the right stuff. I also want to know if it is a nutrient issue causing it. It is not bumblefoot. There are no injuries and they don't seem to be in pain.  I can provide pics and video.

Hi Crystal, Welcome to Permies!

I see you posted this a week ago, maybe the duck is doing better already? I don't have personal experience with ducks yet, but hope to someday.

My guess would be curly toe paralysis caused by a B vitamin deficiency, specifically B2 (riboflavin). There are Vitamin B vitamin supplements and water additives, people also add brewer's yeast to their food.

In the meantime, you might consider making some "shoes" for the duck so that it might be able to walk. People use medical tape, moleskin, or foot foam for bunions.

When you tape, and this is definitely easier with two people, make sure you completely spread the foot apart. The easiest way to do this is to cut a piece of tape you think is a little too big, then put the duckling's foot on top of it, gently spread the web completely as you go to stick the tape to the bottom of the foot. Then put a piece of tape on the top of the foot and take your thumb and index finger and press, press, press to stick the tape to the toes, webs, and itself on the edges. This will not hurt the duckling.

If this happens often, you might consider investing in something like these birdy booties:

I haven't used them and don't know how good they are.

Maybe someone else has experience and can comment?

Hope the bird is doing well, good luck!

Good morning, this started to appear with our muscovies about 3 months ago. We live in a complex with a lake and there are maybe a dozen or so. It seems like it has affected all of them at one point or another. Multiple times for several. Even new born ducklings. The foot goes limp and curls and they have a severe limp for 7-10 days. We thought maybe it was something in the water, but No other bird seems to be affected. We only feed them scratch grain. A neighbor feeds them a mix with yeast and grain... we have no idea what is causing this.
