My family ran a hardware store when I was in high school. Among the purchased fixtures of the predecessor business were many extremely vintage steel Dorman hardware drawers/bins that looked like this:
Dorman Products is a venerable name in auto parts and small hardware. Their current web page has a
"brand toolkit" that identifies their distinctive color, which they call "Dorman Orange":
RGB: 251 - 99 - 23
HEX: #FB6317
Pantone: 165C
CYMK: 0 - 76 - 100 - 0
I've been seeing this color on old hardware bins my entire life. But I have a red/green color vision problem, which makes it extremely difficult for me to look at any given color and identify it with confidence or say whether it's the same as another color. Also photos on the internet may have been color tweaked at various stages before we see them.
Below are photos of a heavy steel box I bought at an estate sale not long ago. It had random junk in it and has no markings I can find, but I feel it may have originally protected a Dorman product. My photos are not color tweaked. It looks Dorman Orange to me. I'd like other opinions on whether it's the same color -- especially if you are familiar with Dorman branding IRL and not just comparing two photos as I've presented them here.
I think the box is very fine and worth cleaning up and restoring. I don't
really care if it was originally a Dorman box, but I am interested in what people think about the color match. Thanks!
