Okay let’s be real! What do you actually do with your pigs in winter? This will be our first year overwintering our breeding pigs. Our snow load is such that they cannot be rotated like we do in the summer so in reality they may have to stay in one spot for up to 5 months (at the longest). We have a huge garden. 60 ft by 70ft. I would really like them to go into the garden to clean up after everything is harvested. But real talk: is that safe? I’ve heard parasites are a problem.
Should I just not do that all together or could I deworm before they go in there? Can I keep them in there all winter? Would it not be safe to plant after that (given about a 3 month rest after they move out but before I plant).
Im thinking I just need to invest in a deep bedding winter structure? What size would you recommend for 3 Idaho pasture pigs full grown?
My current plan is to put them in the garden for just a couple weeks to clean up after harvest and then move them to a permanent winter spot after. Just hard to plan when we can get dumped on with snow pretty much anytime after Nov 1st. I only have premier one electrical hog net. They are very respectful of it but I’m not sure how it will hold up throughout the winter?
