Hello folks! I wanna find out if any of you seen any wild tobacco, ( nicotiana rustica) in the wild throughout the American Great Lakes. I haven't seen any from the wild before, but if I have, then they must've been weeds. I wanna learn about the rustica and its life in the wild, cause I'm growing a local and indigenous medicinal and tea garden this year to teach folks the importance of natural healing. I also wanna find out if there were some reintroductions of rustica in the wild on Native American land lately and any of you witnesssed it? Please share more with me to make this topic more edifying for all to embrace. Have a good day.

I've come to the conclusion that the plant is probably not actually native to here, but was just grown extensively by the Native people's. Some articles seem to suggest the plant is only native to Mexico.

Nicotiana rustic doesn't naturally grow in the wild up here, but has been garden-grown for a very long time. On the other hand, there are many plants native to this area which are sometimes referred to as tobacco or kinnikinnick because they are used that way, and even some introduced plants that got adopted for this purpose early on (like mullein). Some examples of native plants used in smoke blends are bearberry, red twig dogwood (& other Cornus), women's tobacco (Antennaria), fleabane, sumac (the leaves), yarrow. Those would be nice to grow in your garden.

D! I've grown some Miami and Cherokee tobacco in my greenhouse so far and have sprouted. Looking forward to planting my tobacco in my medicinal and tea gardens this year.
