Hi,
I posted this in the soil forums but maybe I need to ask this here since I'm currently building some hugelkultur beds.

1) I know loam soil is the ideal soil structure.  It's comprised of sand, silt, & clay and ideally would be 40%, 40%, & 20% composition respectively.

2) Separately, I know we always talk about the many ways we can accumulate wonderful organic materials for use in our beds and compost piles, and the importance of chop and drop  are spreading around organic materials as mulch.

3) What I haven't found is anyone marrying the too concepts in a discussion for the need to have both LOAM and ORGANIC material.

Maybe some never thought of this either.  But I believe it would have significant implication on things like keeping a high hugelkultur bed from falling over, erosion, and things I may not be aware of.  I just haven't seen it mentioned anywhere.

If I plan to build some beds and all I have is compost, should I be adding in sand, silt, & clay?!?!

I recommend 25-30% compost & the rest whatever soil you have. A hugel built with nothing but compost would disappear fairly quickly. Soil alone won't give the plants & soil critters sufficient nutrition.

Thanks!  I knew I was missing something.  I feel like all I ever read and hear about is stuffing them full of compost!?
