Hello Food Forest Designers!

Spend 2-5 Days Working with Dave Jacke, ecological designer and author of Edible Forest Gardens, in Helena, Montana!:

The community of Helena, Montana invites Dave Jacke and workshop participants to design a 1.1-acre public park integrating community gardens with edible forest gardens. Edible forest gardens mimic the structures and functions of forest ecosystems while producing food and other products. While emphasizing low-maintenance perennial crops, we’ll also focus design and plant selection on building fertility, controlling weeds and pests, reducing the need for irrigation, and more. You will work with Dave Jacke and our community to design forest schematics and polycultures for our bioregion. Your name will be listed as one of our park designers. You will receive an electronic completed professional park design document, listing you as a member of the design team.

This will be the first Public Park Edible Forest Garden in Montana! Come make history with us while developing skills in permaculture design that will shape both your and our planet’s future!

5-day Full Workshop Design Charette, Polyculture Practicum (Design Team Leadership Opportunities Available), July 9-12
Weekend Design and Polyculture Practicum July 12-14

Instructors: Dave Jacke with support from Inside Edge Design Consultants

On Tuesday evening, Dave will introduce key concepts of forest gardening, laying out the essence of the idea and its implications for the 6th Ward Park Gardens.

During the 3-day Design Charrette (Wed morning through Fri evening) participants will watch, listen, and engage with Dave and his local team as we design the park to a schematic level. Dave and participants will present schematic design ideas to stakeholders and weekend Design and Polyculture Practicum participants on Friday evening during a community dinner.

During the Weekend Design and Polyculture Practicum, you will work in teams, led and instructed by Dave, to take the design further, filling in details of the schemes presented Friday night. You arrive on Friday afternoon and join our schematic presentation community dinner! Helena Community stakeholders provide feedback. Meet and mingle with community members, Dave Jacke and course participants. On Saturday, working with Dave Jacke, teams develop the park schematics by responding to Helena Community feedback and aligning community response to schemes developed during the 3-day charrette. By Sunday you will be designing zone and climate appropriate polycultures to fit within the park schemes. This weekend session is where you dive into polyculture design. You will find this intensive experience well worth it!
