week 1

We got internet a couple of hours ago. 12mbps.

Living out of boxes here at basecamp. There are two tiny bedrooms that are 100% empty. My current thinking is that I would like to put two bunkbeds in one room and a full size bed in the second room. The idea is that the first room will just hold lots of peeps and the second would be a sort of VIP room.

There is a standalone tack room which I suspect will someday be converted to funky hippie habitat.

My brother has camp set up on TL. Today he asked me to pop out to his camp because he left a couple sacks of grain out where it could get wet. I put it inside his tentish thing. I also planted a bunch of seed at one of the gates in an effort to make it look like that road is unused.

I just time traveled 40 years into the past to our fort in the backyard. Gotta run. Mom's shouting, "supper!!!"

The internet and cell reception (Verizon) will both be better than my place here in Woodinville - very cool!

12 Mbps! We call high speed anything over 1.5 (the Internet company calls it 3mbps I guess that's if no one else in the county is online)

Bill arrived yesterday.

We went up to TL to have a quick look. Somebody hooked a chain to the upper gate and ripped it out.

Bill spotted two bears. By the time I caught sight of where he was pointing, I saw one was bigger than the other. So probably a momma and cub. They were beelining away from us.

My brother Tim and Family delivered 7 cattle and an electric golf cart. We had some trouble getting the golf cart off of the trailer - but it all worked out in the end.

Tim has a few tents set up on TL, including something that is a big enough to hold a picnic table and a propane stove and a full size garbage can. It looks like the bears opened the side of that tent and played with the garbage.

Lots of folks are coming out today.

*gasp* about the bears though! we don't really hardly have any here and if anything you see a print. almost never the actual bear. which is good enough for me! hahaha. at least they were leaving. even if they did help themselves to your goody bin

Very cool Paul. Sorry to hear about the gate.

I just watched a documentary about living in Siberia and it touched on dealing with bears and human dwellings in the wilderness. They said the bears will enter cabins and other types of dwellings even if there is no food and mess stuff up. Maybe a thread should be started on bear and other critter proofing on TL.

Edit: I just saw the Bear Spray Thread.... Excellent. May be this post should be on that thread?

I wonder if bone sauce would triger the same "get the hell out of here" instinct in bears as it does in other animals. Might be worth a try painting it on trees near the camp sites. The unwanted campers leaving trash won't help matters.

From a permie perspective we should try utilizing the "problems" as solutions. Gate gets ripped off, bear food enters, bear fertilizes swale with poop, owner eats bear. With some observation and nudging nature, I think this could work.

It was a little slow going, but turned out great.

Very sad about the gate, cool about the bears, a sign of a nice healthy eco system (the bear part anyway.)

One thing that can be done is a solar battery operated motion camera, like the Forest service uses aimed at the gate to catch the culprits in the act, and hopefully get them to pay for the damage. Humans.. sadly, can't live with them , and can't live with out them..
