Hi All;
I have been operating a Harris single-nozzle Pelton wheel micro hydro since 1996.
I ordered a dozen extra nozzles when I bought it, so I always had a spare.
28 years later I have run out of the smaller size nozzles.
My spring is 2200 feet away with 300' of vertical drop and I have 125 psi
water pressure at the hydro/house.
This water is an artesian spring that bubbles through the bedrock.
There are very fine stones that come down the line at high velocity.
The original Pelton wheel itself was made from bronze, It is amazing what 24-7 high-velocity gravel will do to bronze over a few years...
I replaced that bronze wheel two times.
The last time it wore away I discovered that there was a stainless steel Pelton wheel available, the best part was it was only $100 more than a bronze one!
I purchased it and there is zero wear, after many years of continuous duty.
The nozzles are made from brass.
They are very durable but against high-velocity gravel, they ultimately lose.
I have limited water so I use small nozzles, 1/8"- 9/64"- 5/32" depending on the season. Like the Pelton wheel, the nozzles slowly wear and enlarge themselves.
I started searching for replacements. The Harris name had sold several times. Nozzles were not easily located.
The current owners of the Harris brand do
sell nozzles however, they are not cheap and they tack on an outrageous shipping charge to ship a thumb-sized piece of brass.
I continued looking, and looking, and looking!
I finally located a Machine shop in Grants Pass, OR that made Harris nozzles, and sold and shipped them for a reasonable cost!
I promptly ordered two, both in 1/8" they quickly arrived and I was a happy hydro guy!
The machining on the new ones was different than the original, not as much metal, but it looked like it might even work better than the original.
After installing I found that the output was identical, so no improvement but I had new nozzles.
Unfortunately, after 5-6 weeks the first new nozzle had already started to enlarge itself!
I installed the second nozzle and the water consumption/ power output returned to where it
should be.
I called Alternative Power & Machine to ask if they made or could make them from stainless steel.
No, they had never made any but, they would look into it and get back to me.
After two weeks or so I wondered if I would hear back from them.
The next day my phone rang and they had two machined stainless nozzles ready to ship!
The cost with shipping was just over $50 for two, hopefully, lifetime ss nozzles!
A price I was happy to pay!
When my new nozzles arrived I was surprised to see how they had accomplished the job.
Rather than make the entire nozzle from stainless they simply machined stainless inserts for the brass nozzle!
I am very impressed, a real old-time machine shop willing to get the job done, and at a fair price!
