Hi All; Still working on my rmh and was wondering about how well the clamp on lid of a 55 gal barrel seals ? Do I need some kind of gasket here ? Also I am cobbing the bottom 2/3 of my barrel and was wondering if I can inbed a row of tiles around the upper level of cobb ? Thanks Tom

Usually you need to replace the gasket with rope gasket: http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/rutlandreg%3B-grapho-glasreg%3B-fiberglass-stove-rope-gasket-kit-1-2-in-x-7-ft

Or joint mortar: http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/rutlandreg%3B-furnace-cement-black--103-fl-oz

Or seal it with cob. Free.

Depends how easy you want to be able to undo and redo it. It is made to have a gasket in there so the gasket usually works best.

Thomas Rubino : There is a type of High Temperature rope gasket material that comes in various circumferences/diameters with a removable core,
the direct person I could ask is out of touch on the west coast. To use this gasket material you actually tease out the core and use the now skinny flat
Gasket material to make a final seal. There is an original food grade gasket material that must be removed 1st !

I do know that you should be able to find the material thru an online search of the hardware chains .Alternately Ernie W. has been alleged to have
made a gasket out of the dough like mass of ''Wonder Bread ", I never saw Ernie do this and I AM Not putting words in his mouth, just repeating an
apocryphal tale

Tile should work well everywhere, being a denser mass they should store a little more heat energy (at the same temp) and feel warmer !

If you can find tile with coat hooks, (or just place a lag screw into the cob just above) you will have a great spot for Drying/warming gloves !

Late note : R. Scott's rope gasket looks exactly like what i was talking about ! Cob is a possible work-around but in my house it would be a 'shit',' I
dont have any cob made, I can't clean the Rocket today!' Thought that one through, after you find the right sized gasket get a back up

Good Luck ! Big Al

Hi Guys; Glad I asked ! My barrel came with no gasket, I ordered what R. scott suggested and it should be here next week. getting close to being able to fire my rmh up. Chimney is connected, top is going on my bell and horizontal pipes are finaly being cobbed over! 90 degrees here today a balmy 96 in the greenhouse . Soon temps will drop and then I can fire this rocket up !!! Thanks for the info . Tom
