This is my favorite drawing of a
swale:
I thought it was from the
PDM but it's not. Maybe
Intro To Permaculture?
Anyway, I posted this a few days ago and it occurred to me I had actually done this!
This year I planted some fruit
trees on a small swale, and, well, here's the pic:
OK, it's the cold temperate version, but pretty darn close! Hard to see the individual plants but they are there. The main thing I'm missing is the fast growing leguminous tree. I do have a few
honey locust and
black locust in peat pots on a window sill, but I wonder if I need to add them. The soil's pretty good and it's downslope from the sheep area. Lots of
Stinging Nettle so I think the fertility is good.
All the sticks were to keep the
chickens from digging the seedlings and it worked. The only problem now is the 137 lb dog likes to lay down in the bare ground to the right of the sticks and that's where the asparagus is trying to come up.
I'm not sure what the temperature version of Taro (
water plant) would be. I could always add it next year. Suggestions?
