Paul, I would love to be an ant. Problem is I do not meet the requirements yet. The 240 podcast I'm working on, I have listened to 100 or so. I do not think 140 more will change my views on you. You are my Sepp (the glorious almighty Paul). The thing that holds me back is I cannot uproot my family and move to Montana. I am the only bread winner in my family of 6 so I can't quit my job yet either. I would love it if you would open up some land for weekend warriors. Maybe I just need to be a gapper first and go from there.

How far away are you?

I live in Tacoma, WA. I just was thinking you could expand the ant idea to people who cannot live at the lab, but could set up systems that do not need baby sitted. They could spend some time getting it started and then come check on it here and there. Maybe they would only need a quarter acre to practice on.

Hmmmm ....

I know that sepp holzer came to dayton, put in some ponds and hugels and split. Maybe the thing to do is to set up patches where people can show off their "art". Maybe they come for a week and do stuff and run away like sepp. Or maybe they come back a few times a year and keep on improving.

Maybe it is set up as an acre so that that person might some day upgrade to being an ant or deep roots or something.

So, what might this arrangement look like?

I guess it would depend on the time line. If someone could become an ant in a year or two they could set up systems at their own pace till they could uproot to the lab. This way they would have a better start than someone coming as an ant and having no systems set up. My situation might look like a permaculture glamping spot that I can improve on and to learn from. I have 4 kids from 10mos to 15 and don't know if I could ever become an ant at the lab. But maybe the time spent on the lab would allow me to be an ant on a property here and then becoming a grasshopper.

On the one hand, I think a good thing to do would be to come support the current ants and get an idea of what you might try.

On the other hand, I think that if you want to start right in with your own spot .... I would suggest deep roots. Tinker with it as you like as the years pass. Maybe down the road, sell your plot.

On yet another hand, plop down the $800 ant thing. That gets you way more than a year, and you can just rent it again next year if that's still your thing.

And then a fourth hand: make me an offer of what you think would be super cool and that I would probably go for.

I think I do need to come out and be a gapper first and go from there.
