Color me extremely dubious that any addition to a
compost heap would dramatically reduce the time needed to fully compost. C:N ratio, heat, and air flow always seemed like the only ways to effectively reduce composting time.
But something I have been dying to experiment with is
ASP composting. The idea with ASP is that you make your pile on top of perforated pipes and suck/blow air through the pipes. This makes a lot of sense to me. It's kind of like the upsides of turning your pile (increasing airflow) without the downsides (effort, redistributing heat & moisture). I've talked to a few people who swear by it and say they get completed compost in a fraction of the time. That being said, I'm not a huge fan of the
energy needed to push that air. But I suspect with some experimentation, something similar with a lower energy
footprint could be possible.
