oh i didn't literally till the soil. i just broke it up enough for the roots to have a bit more room below the compost/soil mixture.

hi,

i just spent a good chunk of time building a 16 X 5ft. raised bed in my back yard and tilling up the existing sod. i got to the last 1/4 of the length of the bed and discovered rocks. lots of roughly golf ball sized rocks about a foot below the surface. i really don't want to dig them all out, and i really don't want to have to move my raised bed. i plan to dump about 12 inches of good compost/topsoil over the ground i've tilled. can anyone tell me if my plants will be hindered in any way by these rocks? it feels almost as if there is concrete down there!

any help is appreciate as always.

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good source for obtaining heirloom or other non-gmo blue berry, black berry, raspberry, strawberry plants, either in the Los Angeles area or online? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, thank you all so much for the replies! I can tell this forum is going to be a valuable resource.

I have thought about just having berry shrubs and bushes as my top layer but I've had some trouble finding heirloom or other non-gmo seeds. Any recommendations for that? I'm particularly interested in blueberries, black berries and raspberries. Thanks.

Hello,

I'm new here and about to embark on my very first garden! My question is....Can I have a permaculture food forest without trees? My yard has a few very old and very large oak trees but I'm not able to afford to put in smaller nut or fruit trees in the layer below them at this time. Is it possible to start my food forest with something like hedges or bushes being at the top of the various layers? Any help/input is greatly appreciate.
