Hi Tom,
I have a ground cover of Ozark Beauty strawberries around three giant fig bushes here in zone 6 Pittsburgh, PA and have had good success with both the figs and berries. Figs have a very prolific root system and the berries don't seem to mind as long as they get enough light through the branches. I did get some fruit rot last summer as we had a lot of rain in the fall and it was hard to pick the figs/berries fast enough as they swelled with water and rotted quickly, but other than that it's been fine.
