Wow! Thanks so much, Kim, for taking the time to post all these resources.
I'm in NY so I'll definitely start local :)
THANK YOU!!!

Hello all!
I just joined the board of a wildlife sanctuary that happens to have an old apple orchard on it. We're like to put up new fencing around the orchard to better protect the trees. Any suggestions on grants that might fit this project?
I'm not having much luck with a general googling.
Thanks for your insights!

Hi All -
I just moved to a new property in upstate NY (yay!) and inherited lots of perennials including some beautiful elderberry.
This morning I noticed that the elders have a bunch of black aphids and that some of the leaves on branches with the aphids are yellowing.
So I started spraying with some soapy water when I noticed a ladybug!

A couple questions for the group:
Short term solution:
1) How do you feel about the ladybugs you can buy from the garden center? Should I grab a tub of those and release them to feast? I only sprayed maybe three clumps of aphids so there's plenty to nom.

2) The infestation is pretty intense - at this point do I just soap spray them and plan for attracting more ladybugs for next year?

Long term solution:
3) I'd love to guild up my elderberries and have found some lists of plants that attract ladybugs (nasturtium, dill, etc.). Anyone have suggestions for additional plant friends for my elders? They are in partial shade.

Thanks all!
Looking forward to connecting on this!

oh, hi! haven't gotten one yet. but we're shopping around! lots of competition right now.
Thanks! I'm in upstate NY. My main concern was the potential herbicide contamination. Love to idea of sampling the soil and growing some beans!
Hi All -
I'm considering a property that is currently used as horse paddocks. Anything I should be concerned about if I want to convert the same area to grow vegetables?
Thanks for your insights!

Great question! I'm in the same boat. I'm looking at properties in upstate NY - north of Albany - but I'm new in town. I'm trying to be close-ish to a town with folks I can be friends with so I'm trying to look for things like a food co-op and independent book store. I'm also talking to folks at the farmers market to see where they live.
