I built a hugel bed on top of a freshly cut plum stump a couple of years ago. It’s been a great bed, and is now growing raspberries.
I just cut down two apples to an inch above the ground, and am about to cover with rabbit manure, and deep mulch. I already have a great pumpkin planted next to it in a pile of rabbit manure compost, but in future I may just make it into a seating nook in the garden, and cut off any volunteer shoots to feed the rabbits.
