Wow, Big Al. That's quite the post. I hope your tear ducts have regained their strength

I appreciate the hint about the 16 gal drum at a lube place. I was able to walk down the street to Jiffy Lube, and sure enough they go through them all the time. They said they'd set one aside for me and to come back Saturday. This will allow me to return the 20 gal silver trash can and save $20.

As for the rest of the video, I only used it because it had a good view of the riser. I'm actually probably going to go closer to a design for the "portable" RMH that Paul Wheaton has on Youtube. I'm trying to heat a 16' x 7.5' greenhouse to grow through the winter. The biggest question in terms of design, is should I bury this all under the floor of the greenhouse, or use the portable box-like design that's above ground and use the box as shelving.

Do you think one off those small silver trash cans would work?

Thanks. There is a landfill in the area, but apparently they are against taking anything out.

I'm just about to make my first RMH and I've acquired 8" stove pipe and a 55 gal drum. In many videos I've seen that the 8" pipe is placed into a barrel (looks like 16 gal?) with cob or some other type of insulation, and then capped around the insulation with a hole for the 8" pipe. How important to the overall system is this 16 gal drum? The main reason I ask is I've been monitoring Craigslist etc for some time now and I haven't come across any for sale. And buying them online is about $70.

Are there good alternatives to this drum? Some kind of rolled steel or something?

Thanks,

R Scott: the M67 arrived yesterday. It had some rust spots on it, but otherwise in excellent condition. I think the rust is from poor storage over its years. So it took a week from NC to VA, and it weighed 67 lbs according to the shipping manifest.

I'm wondering if someone more adept at legal jargon can help me understand this:
"Beginning January 1, 2015 all solar facilities under 20 MW and certified with either a local building authority or the Department of Environmental Quality are exempt from state and local taxes. The law broadly defines eligible solar facilities as "any property, including real or personal property, equipment, facilities, or devices...designed and used primarily for the purpose of collecting, generating, transferring, or storing thermal or electric energy." (DSIRE)

Additional Info (http://lis.virginia.gov/cgi-bin/legp604.exe?000+cod+58.1-3660)

I'm curious to know if a solar powered home would qualify. I don't even see that it has to produce a minimum amount of electricity. But how to get it "certified with either a local building authority or the Department of Environmental Quality" ? Maybe it's only good for solar farms...

Thanks,

Matthew

R Scott: I bought it at http://www.military-tent.com/imheunco.html. This is my first time shopping with them so I can't vouch for them as I have not yet received my order. But, then again, I only ordered on Friday afternoon. I didn't even think that the oil would need heating. Definitely something to think on.

Big Al: When you say "cut the waste oil with #1 kerosene", do you mean a mix of the 2, or just avoid the veggie oil all together? Also thanks for the info on engineering toolbox.

Hi all,

I just ordered an M-67 Immersion heater ( as seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsO9N7GIfis ), that I want to use in either an 275 gal IBC tote (with lid chopped off) or a metal container, in order to heat a 7' x 16' greenhouse ( design found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DKlXs8iov0 ) on winter nights. I plan to try to use waste veggie oil as the fuel. Does anyone see any danger in doing this, or have alternative recommendations for use of the M-67? I am also curious if I can add addition flu and run it underground like an RMH to use any of the wasted heat.

Also I hear there are some kind of formulas in thermaldynamics that can help me figure out how much water, and at what temperature, would be needed to heat a space of a given size. Can anyone direct me to some information to help me calculate that?

Thanks for your insights,

Matthew
