Hi there, Rebecca Norman.  Thanks for the informative reply.  My intent for a wall like this actually does fall in line with the idea of fortification.  The intent was not as part of a inhabited building per se, but as a perimeter wall around a living complex, such as a Roman courtyard villa, or that of Chinese/Japanese Siheyuan home complex.

I'm looking at property in the NE of Minnesota, which means a large, steady supply of wood is easily accessible.

For the earth mix, I was only thinking along the lines of the mix typically used in un-stabilized compressed earth blocks.  The "toothpaste" analogy certainly makes sense though.

I was thinking the wall would be daubed after construction.

This is all brainstorming and research at this point for me.

So, does anyone here have any knowledge, pictures, warnings, links, etc. on this technique?

Is this a "why didn't I think of that"?

Are the knowledgeable people not online lately, or just not here anymore?

Too long, didn't read?

Hey there, I've been browsing through the posts, but cannot seem to find any mention of building a double wattle and daub wall, tied together to provide a form for a rammed/tamped earth core, which is left in situ, then has a daub applied afterwords.  I found this picture of an ancient chinese/japanese palisade wall that seems to use this method.

Does anyone here have any more information on this concept?
