Marley Kelly,
I have the very same problem! What was the outcome for you? My backyard Brahma hen (last of the flock now) has recently started crowing! So loud that I’ve been reported to the council. She is free range, however I now lock her in her coop at night so that she doesn’t crow to early! When I let her out at a reasonable time it’s not an issue. However she still does crow from time again in her coop! Which lets no lights in! Before anyone asks she is definitely a hen. Has always laid eggs, behaved like a hen and looks like one. She use to be an extremely broody hen as well!
I’m now in the situation of what to do next? I don’t want to use a collar....a bit unsure of them an it doesn’t seem to stop the crowing, just reduces the noise supposedly. I will keep her locked up at night, however she does still crow in her coop now and then? I don’t want to rehome her, the kids love her and she is part of the family. However would adding more hens to the flock help her from stopping to crow? She only just started to this when all of the other hens had died, and I know they are social animals. I was against getting more as one of my dogs didn’t like a hen we rescued a while back (had to rehome her...it was a different breed though, might be the reason??) If so is there any chance she could revert back into her hen behaviours conpletely??? Or does anyone think she would display even more dominant cockerel like behaviours?
