Jeff, that's not all that good...

Thanks, Blaine, for your concerns. I recognize the security risks associated with my ‘methods’. A few notes:
1. It’s fairly widely accepted that many security tools (especially open source) include ‘back doors’ for the ‘bad guys’ (CIA, NSA, ABC, XYZ…) - If ‘they’ really want to get in, in all likelihood, they can.
2. Most of my work is with a desktop macOS computer which includes a Firewall, a Password manager and other security options that help prevent some intrusions. Apple also offers a service to generate random email address for use when setting up accounts with online service providers. While Apple’s privacy stance is often well regarded, they’ve also been known to have knuckled under to ‘authorities’…
3. Re: security questions - I, too, use non-sensical answers for those obvious phishing tokens, such as “nunya” for names (nunya business), “Anytown” for addresses, etc. Random alpha-numeric-symbolic entries work well, too.
4. There are several alternatives emerging that offer some hope for a more secure & private online experience. Here are a links to some of these. Most of these are from Mike Winner (formerly of Alfa Vedic with Barre Lando)

caveat emptor: I have not used, nor do I endorse any of these systems or services and offer them solely for your information and elucidation

Wow! Thanks Sara for sharing all your fetchin’ up in this arena. And that ‘arena’ is today what the Roman gladiator arenas of yore continue to be… the wild, wild, west. A webmaster friend calls the evil meanies “butt fungus”. And now with AI Bots trolling the countryside it’s cause for increased vigilance by each of us.
… and you’ve certainly offered a plethora of tips, tricks and tools to add to our ‘kit’

For macOS and iOS the guys over at Mac Power Users highly recommend 1Password for their password and sensitive information management - Password Manager, Secrets, and Access Management | 1Password. - https://1password.com
And, they too, are fans of Proton Mail

Came here enticed by today’s (07/21/2026) permies daily-ish post regarding propagating Goldenseal in Western North America… My first thought was to direct the ‘seekers’ to United Plant Savers [UPS] who have their home base here in SE Ohio, since I have no hands-on experience with Goldenseal.

Firstly, it’s a pleasure to find Judson Carroll here on permies!! Why am I not surprised!?!? I’ve been a semi-frequent listener to his podcast for some years now and stand in awe of the breadth and depth of his experience and knowledge in plant-dom.

Judson, like me, appear hail from the same tribe - that being the Long-Winded Tribe :-)

Anyway here’s a link to one rather extensive treatise about Goldenseal by the folks at UPS:
The Forest Farmers Handbook - 2nd Edition (Free Download) - United Plant Savers

While you’re there, doing a search for Goldenseal will return many (!!) results

AOK Here, too
Hey there Paul

Worked AOK here, too. Thanks for offering a great one-stop-shopping resource on Hugelkultur.

Please consider adding this to the .pdf version: It would be nice if the Table of Contents had hyperlinks to the related 'contents' of the book

Since the new permies hosting & software went live I regularly encounter issues with the Login dialogs.
The first part (Enter email) - the entry field doesn't accept the email offered to be entered by macOS's password manager. Furthermore, it doesn't allow me to copy and paste my email into the field - manual entry only
The second part (Enter Password) initially fails to accept the proffered macOS Password's entry. but, then it does

Another item: when accessing Permies via links from permies daily-ish emails, the 'checking to see if you're a bot' screen automatically "checks' the user entry checkmark box (control) and proceeds to load the linked page...

Current system:
Mac mini (2024) M4
macOS Tahoe 26.5.2 (25F84) - and earlier versions of macOS 26
Safari 26.5 26.5.2 (21624.2.5.11.8) - and earlier versions

- just thotcha might otter wanna know
Greetings y’all

A couple of tips that helps (me) to remember names:

When first meeting someone, say their name (back to them) at least three times during that initial conversation. Afterwards, write their name down along with other 'identifying' information (e.g., where they work, where you met them, physical characteristics, etc.) - I'd also suggest hand-writing the name vs. 'thumbing' it into an e-device.

It seems to help the "remembering" to 'look 'em in the eye' when you say their names

Part of the 'trick' is to remember to use the tips... ;-)

Nice find!! It was fun paging through the American Homes and Gardens collection. One thing that caught my eye were all the ads for hand- and foot-powered machines (mostly for woodworking) - talk about off-grid tools!! - Like a lathe, scroll saw, and a “former / shaper” for only $15.00 each (appx. $562 in today’s dollars)

The featured homes brought back fond memories of my first apartment in the finished attic of a grand, 3-story, ca. 1895 Victorian brick house. The main stairway woodwork was incredible, as were the huge stile-and-rail pocket doors separating the “parlor” from the dining room (15 foot high ceilings). There were several marvelous beveled stained glass windows facing the east and south gracing the house with all the colors of the rainbow. It still had gas light piping (converted to electric) and my 3rd-floor apartment included a bell used to call the hired help who resided therein. It also had a two-story “3-car+ wide” carriage house out back which served nicely as a workshop for me and a couple of other tenants who lived in the house over the years. Inspired by the craftsmanship of house's woodwork led me to deep dive into fine woodworking, too.
