I was doing so so well... after a month they started pinning so I moved them to an outdoor place with hgh humidity that was pretty dark. Then I noticed flies and bugs and I freaked out so I brought them into the kitchen and they've all ceased to grow - all shriveled up, no growth fo 3 days now.
Should I leave them - will the mycelium continue to produce shrooms, (oysters), or is the mycelium dead and I need to start again?
I'm so peeved with myself. Managed to get one hella tasty meal out of them though
Thanks guys

Oh wow guys - that's encouraging!!!
These responses have actually made my day!
It doesn't smell of mushrooms or mould, but is quite scentless with a very mild perfumey smell.

So I should just wait then? Is it possible that the holes in the side of the bucket are too small? Does it matter that I lift the lid and peek? Any tips on getting them to work are welcome!

Woohoo!!

Hi guys.
So I followed the instructions carefully and thoroughly from a youtube vid (also shared on this forum somewhere) about growing oysters in buckets.
Within about 3 days mould started appearing on the top - I let it continue as i honestly thought it was the mycelium doing it's thing. Now, after 15 days, I'm pretty certain it's cobweb mould.
Every single bucket has a thick layer of cobweb mould covering it.
I went deep inside one bucket and the grain mycelium doesn't seem to have done anything at all.
Why?? I'm so disheartened.
I still have a 6l bag of mycelium in the fridge and a lot more wood pellets so I want to do this again successfully but not sure where I went wrong here.
Was my sawdust too damp? Must the lid of the buckets be airtight (the lids seem slightly lose)? Not sure of other variables. Did I peek too much??

Any feedback appreciated thank you.

Is there any quick way of knowing my mycelium (kept in fridge for a month now) is OK? Before I spend aaaages creating my mushroom beds/ buckets....?
Thanks in advance!

Hi -
I'm new here and new to mushroom cultivation
I am a forager and have a permaculture smallholding and really want to turn it into some kind of mushroom haven.

I bought a 6litre bag of oyster grain spawn less than 2 weeks ago ( 13 days ago).
I opened the bag and used some, and then put it in the fridge (not sure of temperature in the fridge).
I loosely wrapped a plastic bag around the opened bag of spawn.

I went to use it today and am wondering if I was right to cover it with a plastic bag or if it may have contaminated from it? There was some 'juice' in the bag and it smelled quite mushroomy (I guess that might be normal?).
The mycelium at the open end of the bag was a bit harder and starting to yellow, and also watery.

What might the effects be from placing it in the fridge in an opened bag (covered with a plastic bag)?

I used all the mycelium today in my buckets but would like to know if anyone has any feedback, as I'm about to crack open a second bag and will not use it all, so want to make sure I will be storing it properly....

Thank you in advance!

Hi there, i've got a mushroom bed in the garden (we'll see how it goes in a few months) and now starting to look at growing indoors. I like the bucket method. The tutorials I read used sawdust and soaked it overnight in hot water to contaminate and keep moist, before adding to the bucket with mycelium.
I'm wondering if using wood pellets  I would need to soak them too? Now that i'm writing this it seems like a silly question but I want to be certain.
Also - anyone tried buckets with sawdust/ wood pellets? How did it go?
Thanks!
