I built my coop with pallets as the floor, and all om top of hardware cloth. Then just laid down thick layers of sawdust first, then pine shavings, then sand and lastly hemp bedding. That way the chickens still have plenty to scratch at but there is no risk of feet injury from the hardware cloth. The would get to the pallet first anyway. Definitely is not a permanent coop, since the wood will rot. However, everything was scrap materials gathered for free outside of the hardware cloth itself.
