I remember when visiting Stave Kirke in Norway, that this subject was mentioned. I guess I didn't really grasp how it was done and the degree to which it prevented rot.
Any help on the following would be appreciated.
• I'm not clear if it is the ringbarking, spotbarking or if both need to be done to create the most rot resistance.
• Also, does anyone have a formula/recipe to create the "tar that those churches are periodically treated with. Modern ingredients would be fine!
• Will this girdling or spotbarking produce similar rot resisting results in any hardwood species??? Ash, for example.
