One year later and we're still here!  We have several open rooms in our common houses to welcome new members that are excited to build something special with us.  Most of our original post still holds true, though we now have a website with more information about us (alphafarm.org).  We are preparing to construct a new 2500 sq-ft high tunnel in our garden to allow us to extend our growing season, and have been spending a lot of time over the past year reviewing/improving our internal systems.

If you dream of co-creating an egalitarian, income-sharing community in a stunning temperate rain forest in the Coastal Range of Oregon, apply for a visit through alphafarm.org/visit, or send us an email at visit@alphafarm.org.  We'd love to hear from you!

Hello Permies!

Alpha Farm is a 50-year-old, 280-acre intentional community nestled in a beautiful valley in the Oregon coastal range.  We are blessed with ~20 acres of arable land, and the infrastructure and tools to co-create abundance with it.  We are seeking a few new residents with experience farming/homesteading and a passion for community living!

We are an egalitarian, income-sharing community of 12 people (plus 8 cats, 2 goats, 6 ducks, and 20 chickens!).  The property is owned collectively, with decisions made by consensus.  We all share responsibility for the ongoing success of this hopeful experiment, and contribute by keeping the farm funded, maintained, clean, warm, and productive, etc.  We are located 40 minutes from the coast and an hour from Eugene, giving us all the benefits of a quiet, rural, and serene setting, yet within easy reach of the conveniences of stores, an airport, and the beauty of the ocean.  You can find additional information about us at https://www.ic.org/directory/alpha-farm

In terms of farming infrastructure, there is currently 1 acre is used for production of summer vegetables, along with a 1-acre mature apple orchard, 5-acre pasture for our chickens, ducks, and goats, and ~12 acres of grassy meadow which can be used for hay or other crop production.  We have 2 tractors on site, with several implements including a windrower and bailer, all of which are in need of some repair.  We have a small greenhouse, woodshop, and a supply of tools and materials.  In recent years, the limited amount of produce grown on site has been consumed by the residents, though we are expand operations this year and establishing a CSA within the local community.  We are also exploring grants to fund efforts related to forestry, farming infrastructure, and establishing a food forest as a riparian buffer along the creek that runs through our property.

For an energetic and motivated farmer/permaculturist, there is a lot of potential here to pursue more intensive market gardening, establish a dairy operation, produce value-add products, maintain and build new structures, etc.  Though the work will be collaborative, a self-starter with vision and drive is most likely to thrive here!

If you have experience in farming, maintenance, construction / natural-building, or operating a small-business, and you’re excited to live and work alongside others, reach out to us at “alpha at peak.org“!  Please include an introduction, describing your interest and experience in both farming/permaculture and living in community, and what you believe makes Alpha Farm a good fit for you!
