We have had to get someone in to assess our forested areas, to see how much of the 104 acres would qualify for MFTIP. That report cost about $2200.
Turns out about 81 acres qualified, and our property taxes went from around $15k to just under $7k - big difference.
It is a 10 year commitment, with an update required at the 5 year mark. We didn't have many stipulations - basically don't hack it all down for profit.
We are able to remove about 15 cords of fire wood for our own use, and, of course, all the dead ash trees are fair game. We also comitted to some trail maintenance, and invasive species removal, such as buckthorn and phragmites. It is a "best effort" situation, nobody really checks up on you.
Can't recommend this program enough - four of our immediate neighbors are part of this, and it's nice to know that at least some our forested neighbourhood might endure.
