I ferment on the grain. By my math, I'm about 8.5% alcohol, when I strain it off. I start with eight pounds of grain in a five gallon bucket.
I've done some more research that has said that the alcohol is more dangerous for very, small birds with tiny, little livers. These mallard hybrids and muscovies are so big and fat, I'm sure their livers are not having much of a problem processing eight and a half percent alcohol in a crop full of grain. None of them have shown any signs whatsoever of intoxication or impairment. They do absolutely love the grain.
My girlfriend noticed that when they'll pick up a beak full, they always shake their head before they swallow. They don't do that with the other grains.
