Biography
Hello!
I live in the pnw in Washington state, but have lived in Canada most of my life, only around 35 miles away.
I spent alot of time at an old homesteader farmers place when I was a kid and he had so many different birds from guinni hens to mute swans, , and friends Mom gave me some extra seed packets around years ago and have been growing things ever since, and I love it.
I've grown many different veggies and animals for healthy eating and to not be so dependant on the grocery store. I love that with a little bit of work, you can eat gourmet food from your backyard, and there are endless options how to farm animals and plants together. Looking for a good homestead property here to purchase before it all turns to blueberries and raspberries. I've raised quail, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, and hair sheep. Farming can be alot of work, so I've been more into perrenial Vegetables/fruits as opposed to 'green slavery' vegetables. Also I'm always trying to think of new ways to have animals in nice clean pens and lush green area's with the least amount of work. Good temperments is so important in animals(and humans!😉)
Enough about me. Drop me a line if you have anything you want to talk about.
Thanks for reading! Cheers!!

Over this way, if you like freedom and warm how about the good old USA, in Florida or Texas, otherwise look into Costa Rica or maybe even Paraguay.  I have not been to any of these places, only talked with people who have or live there, and the internet of course, but those are places I dream about visiting or living.  I know people who moved to South Dakota in 2021, but they weren't going there for the beaches.

I used to catch them in ditches when I was a kid, so somthing like that would help I'm sure.

I grew ground nuts last year that I aquired from Interwoven Permaculture.  They are lsu improved, but not sure about specific variety.  Maybe some of you know what kind they have?  I would be willing to sell or trade with others here locally in the pnw for other perrenial veg/herbs that I want such as red sunchokes or kale or good king henry and the like.  They grew VERY well here in the pnw, overwelming the trelis I made for them.  They have died back since, even though we have barely froze here this winter.  I have not looked how they have done underground, but I noticed the aspasragus nearby also did very well, assuming from the nitrogen fixing nature of the groundnut.  I am looking forward to serving ground(ed) up nuts this year.

I'm probably echoing someone here but, Calfonia leghorns or some commercial hybrid of them like pearl leghorns would be your best bet.  They forage too, just not you're friendliest or quietest chicken, although some say if you handle them alot from chicks they would be nicer.
I want mini leghorn's because mini's eat 1/4 of the feed and give you about half the eggs, and are supposedly a bit tamer.
I also saw a show where if you soak feed in water it will make the chickens fuller and they eat less feed and its better for them.  I have not tested this though.
Plus all the stuff the others said about having chickens is not being just about cost!
Happy chickening

I used raised beds so they didn't get into garden much, but I'm sure they would eat greens and dig around in them.  Ducks are amazing to get rid of slugs/slug eggs.  I had no slugs for several years after I had a flock of khacki Campbell ducks, not sure about other more tropical bugs as I'm in PNW.   Ducks are ALOT of work though, mostly for giving them a clean pond.
