Anyway in reply to breaking down the flax to use as cordage, I'm quite impatient, so I pull the flax over one of those florist frog things with nails/ikebana? It leaves me with a reasonably fine thread, which you can then use to make cordage. It gives a great result without much effort. You can dry overnight, or use green, with a little shrinkage.
