Great topic, and living in Farmington NM I can really relate to the hot and dry conditions challenge. The single biggest change for me was switching to a drought tolerant grass: buffalo grass and turf-type tall fescue blends handle our intense sun far better than Kentucky bluegrass and need noticeably less water. I also water deep but infrequent, about one inch once a week in the early morning, which pushes roots down instead of keeping them shallow. Mowing at three to four inches made a huge difference too, since taller blades shade the soil and cut evaporation. If your lawn is thin or patchy, starting fresh with sod is honestly the fastest fix in a climate like this, and Sod Farmington NM has solid local guidance on which sod varieties actually survive our heat. And do not discount xeriscaping borders around the lawn, since shrinking the turf area to just what you actually use saves the most water of all.
