We ought not toss out all knowledge, all truth, simply to avoid similarity of terms with religious zealots who claim to know "The Truth." Don't you agree? In fact by relying upon reason and evidence, we can avoid such proclamations and pretenses of omniscience. If instead we rely merely upon opinion and faith, while ignoring or worse yet suppressing reason, evidence and knowledge, we will be left only with these baseless assumptions of omniscience, that is to say with folks yelling at one another proclaiming to know "The Truth" without any objective ruler against which we can compare these claims to determine what is in fact true.
For durability you may want to consider epoxy instead of paint, or even the new line of paint from Pittsburgh, which of course for the life of me I cannot recall the name of..  Pittsburgh just acquired the company that makes this new paint last year, and it is almost as durable as epoxy but for half of the price, and unlike most epoxies, it is water based. I've used it on a shop floor right beside epoxy, and it is very difficult to tell the two apart.

BTW if you are worries about off gassing with polyurethane, there are very good waterborne polys today.

Given the recent round of changes to the forum, I would like to invite anyone who has knowledge (not mere emotional belief but actual knowledge) that I am erring  in any way in the build to please send  me a private  message. Obviously I would not mind  a public  posting, but  I don't want anyone to get into trouble or banned for correcting  my errors should  I present any. Thanks in advance for helping me build a house rather than a coffin..

[(X, t1) <-> X & -(-X) ] . [-X -> X, t1]

-X (t2) -> X & -(-X)

(-(-X) -> Y) -> -Y & (X&-(-X))

(n, tm (n>1)) -> X & -(-X)
---------

(X,t1)
Well I am on bedrock, so from my research and experience, 4 inch thick should suffice, though with trying to level the forms I doubt that any will be under 6 inch thick. Where I will be off of solid stone, on part of the downhill side, I will sink the footing deeper.  These deeper ones will be reinforced with rebar, the others depending on thickness will have fiber and possibly rebar in some. I will also have rebar sticking up on all of them. Some posts will sit on the rebar, other larger posts will butt up to the rebar instead since they are too large to be lifted onto a rebar spike.

I've done paper/poly floors. They are very cool but use a lot of poly. Paint/stain is less expensive.

Kuhn's work The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, to which Emerson refers, is indeed a must read. It is one of those very rare books which can be found in almost all top 100 must read books..

As for the ever increasing accuracy with which we describe reality, well.. is this really a problem? Employing objective observation and critical thought, as well as recognizing that objective reality exists and can be described, does not require omniscience or any pretense of such (though perhaps ironically that presumption is  almost always found in the subjectivity camp). Instead it recognizes that we can perceive reality and to the extent to which we are successful, proved in many ways including the functioning of technology as in my previous examples, we can describe it. As long as we are careful, objective, and reasonable (literally able to use reason) our progress is in one direction: ever towards more accuracy. When we abandon or deny these, well we get Westboro Baptist Church, the KKK, and other thankfully less harmful ills.. such as the roof caving in on my head were I to ignore reason and reality in building my home..
Were that true, then we could have none of the technology we are using to discuss this..
Ludi, if that were it true, then it would be false.. The fact is that while  many may utter opinions on objective facts, exceedingly little that is uttered refers to mere opinion. Reality is what it is, regardless of anyone's utterances or opinions. Truth is correspondence with reality, and though yes truth is quite important, no  capitalizing is necessary. The importance of the truth is greater than any opinion, as unlike all opinion, truth is necessary for knowledge and progress.. Truth is necessary for every achievement we can ever hope  to have, from making the bed to saving the  life of another.
