I also wanted to tell you about Harvest Roots Farm. Here is their add for their event on August 17th 5-8pm. Address is Falkville Alabama, near Huntsville. Harvest Roots would like to invite you to our very first farm-to-table dinner! We offer a
four-course meal featuring new ferments accompanied by beverage pairings, a tour of our
farm, and quality company. You’re encouraged to tell a friend (preferably those whom you

DeVonn Francis is our chef and friend who studies art and design in New York, but was born and raised in Virginia by two incredible, incredibly Jamaican parents. Yes, The Farm, also known as The Hippie Farm by the locals is in Summertown. I actually stayed at a house on The Farm while I took the PDC at Spiral Ridge (most others camped at Spiral Ridge). The Farm was a commune back in the '70's but is now an intentional community. Albert Bates is over the Ecovillage there. Probably it would be good to visit the Ecovillage and Spiral Ridge. Part of the PDC involved visits to The Farm, where we did a mandala garden at The Farm's school as a service project and we visited a man who has an anearobic composting outfit. Very cool to see that as well. What I like about Spiral Ridge is that it's a family homestead where they run a business, teach about permaculture, and they are actually making a living off of permaculture--living the dream! Their homestead is multidimensional--lots of things to learn about how all the puzzle pieces fit together. Also, they use materials from the local Amish community, as well as having a barter system with other others in the community. They are truly inspiring.

Hi, I got my PDC at Spiral Ridge Permaculture Farm in Summertown, Tennessee, which is about an hour's drive south of Nashville. TN. They are open to having people visit. They are wonderful homesteaders and have a dynamic permaculture set-up. Contact Jessie Smith, Cliff Davis or Jennifer Albanese. Also, you may want to join the permaculture groups on Facebook. Nathan, I just read about a permaculture design course in Austin (this August) that uses the students to do community projects. These students could work on the property possibly. Let me know if you'd like to hear more about this. I learned about the course from a post on the Permacuture group on the social network "Linked In."

Charles, I am here in Alabama as well. When do you guys plan on moving? Charleston is a beautiful place but I know nothing about the permaculture community there. Have you and your family dapple with permaculture here in AL? I am shoring up my erosional issues and am reinforcing property structures since I live on a steep hill, but after that will add more trees, shrubs, vines, veg/flowers, etc.
