On a podcast relating to the rmh workshop tour Erica and Ernie did, I heard mention of a rocket mass forge! I must know more! I'm trying my damnedest to learn more about blacksmithing, but I'm on a budget! Got plenty of wood!! Any pictures, links, videos??

Thanks, I didn't understand at first that a true temper would be such a different metal hardness from a typical European stone. At first I was trying to peen it with zero success but with some consistently angled filing it's doing ok. I dot have anything to mow with it anyways, I just hate seeing the old suckers go to rust.

just make sue your saws are sharp, and if you're working with another person- make sure to have good communication between the two of you. theres nothing worse than trying to cut smooth and working against each other. keep your blades oiled when not in use, and get some old firehose to protect your saw teeth.

I have a 2 man in the standard pattern like the one man in your top pic, and a one man with a champion tooth pattern. 5 foot 2 man 3 foot one man. both acquired for 10 dollars. and fixed/sharpened in a few hours. now i keep the one man in the car with a small axe and some other hand tools in case i have to build a cabin all of a sudden.

I appreciate the quick reply. could you define the term toothy? The blade is made by true temper so I have to assume its american.

Just starting out scything as a learning process. I bought a scythe with a curved snath and a grass blade from the junk man down the street for 12 bucks. Blade rusted, but in ok shape once I sanded it back to shiny metal. I got my anvil and my stone, and I've peeked and whetted the sucker. It seems like it takes quite a bit of effort to cut anything!! I'm just wondering if I'm terrible at it cause I'm a newbie, or if it needs to be sharper.

Is there anything you guys can compare a properly sharpened scythe blade to? Sharp as my straight razor? Is less sharp usable? Might be losing my mind.
