Tom OHern wrote:These are quick and easy to make and a great experiment to get started with before trying a bigger system. You can generate a few milliamps with them; enough to eventually recharge a pair of AA batteries after a few hours. Once you get this done, scaling up to a larger vertical axis turbine is easy!

Alright. Thanks, Tom. That's encouraging to read that they're a good starting spot. I was hoping that was the case because I'm a complete newbie to this sort of thing (energy generation, that is).

Hey, I was thinking of building one of these this summer, just to experiment with it and see what it can do.

I was just wondering if someone else has already gone ahead and made one, and what it turned out like? Or if someone had made something similar, and how it compares? Any thoughts, critiques, or pointers to better devices would be great.

Thanks!

Haha! I know that song, too.

And actually, I have been invited to go on a bear hunt. Should be coming up soon.

Wow. The yukon. That's gotta be challenging!

Thank you, Leila.

The Yukon presents it's unique challenges, for sure. I'm familiar with them, overall, this being my 5th year here. I'll be honest and say that I'd much rather be in a warmer climate, but for now the Yukon provides the income I need to accomplish the leg of the journey I'm on. I'll tackle the future when I get to it.

I notice you're from New Zealand. That, as it turns out, is the place I most want to visit in my life. I'm especially enamoured of Coromandel, but I suppose that's not unique for an outsider like me.

Anyway, I may catch you around the board. I'm not much for posting here simply because I spend most of my time reading and trying to orient my brain to the information. I'm not unfamiliar with the content here, but I'm a bit slow at processing it. Until I have some land, the information here is an abstraction to me, and I probably won't be able to appreciate it fully until my hands are dirty with applying it.

Cheers!

Just thought I'd post something and say "hello, everyone!"

I've been lurking around the site for a while, having joined up a little while ago. Right now, I'm just learning more about permaculture and what other people have done in their own lives to regain a more natural state of living. There's a lot to know! A little overwhelming at times.

My aspirations are to buy a piece of land, build an earth-conscious home, raise my own livestock, and wild harvest. On top of that, I'm actively pursuing some hunting skills and will be going on a bear hunt at the end of April this year. I won't be pulling the trigger, but I'll certainly be getting a good education from an experienced hunter, and setting myself on the way toward some outdoor skills that I've been hoping to gain since as far back as I can remember.

I live (for now) in Yukon Territory, Canada.

Thanks for this great opportunity to read and learn.

Cheers!
