Depends. Standard rule is that everbearing strawberries should be harvested from the get go and June bearing should be harvested after the first year. I personally harvest some the first year, but that is because I haven't seen that the plants are all that much healthier if I follow standard guidance to allow root development. I don't know if that is because my soil is so bad that they get what they get and that is all anyway or if they love the soil so much that they happily colonize it even while bearing fruit. We have a nice long growing season, so I'm sure that helps. The berries taste great and I'll keep doing it this way =)

Now blueberries I definitely don't harvest the first year they try to bear, but they cost a lot more per plant than strawberries and I know they like our acid soil enough to really establish given the chance.
What is the consistency of your soil? I ask because mine is a clay loam and I think it could stick to a vertical surface when even slightly moist. Maybe the best solution would be to widen the base so the sides aren't so steep. Once roots invade (I sprinkled white clover seeds on day one and they sprouted very quickly and now I have a basically natural hill with a wooden core.)

Fayetteville Arkansas. Until last year it was pretty restrictive but allowed, last year though an urban agriculture ordinance passed which opens it up a lot. It allows single-family homes to have up to 20 chickens or ducks on any property. Three goats and four beehives are also allowed, depending on the property size. Urban farmers can also sell home-produced agricultural products from their home.

Looks good to me. More importantly it looks like you are growing more than just vegetables out there.

As a father of two young boys myself, I can say that a family that works together and plays together stays together. If you can combine work and play into one activity that also raises healthy food, all the better. Gardens last a short while but relationships last your whole life. Keep up the good work!
