Hi there,
First time posting on this great site. I'm trying to figure something out....
A farmer can deliver fresh chicken manure which I am led to believe is harmful to vegetables if it hasn't composted for 6 to 9 months. This is in part due to its high nitrogen content. So, here's my thinking. If I use a mixture of fresh logs and nicely decomposed logs for the bed of the hugelkultur, would I be right in assuming that perhaps the nitrogen hungry fresh logs would counter any ill effects from the nitrogen rich chicken poop and that the vegetables on top would be unharmed? I was intending to cover the logs with the manure and then layer straw and compost and topsoil above that so that the manure is deep within the structure. Any thoughts? Is chicken manure so harmful un composted that I should steer clear?
