I believe the bark and compost would work. Preferably it should be milled pine bark. I recently read about  the potential of growing blueberries in 100% milled bark. It is supposed to have great water retention and has a compound that resists rotting. Also being pine it is a bit acidic which blueberries love though I would think that would balance out with the addition of compost.
I believe the strawberry was sand or pumice.
