To protect PVC for 50yrs just paint it, I have many valves that had the red handles and they last maybe 4 years in the sun before becoming brittle and break off, the ones with paint on them wont degrade, if you paint with black paint they should last indefinitely, if you paint with white, it's hard to see when the paint is coming off.
